Public input sessions scheduled for Multimodal Transfer Facility Project

June 2, 2021

The City and KU are currently working with consultants to determine a design for the new Bob Billings and Crestline multimodal transfer facility. In addition, the consultants are working to determine the best location and concept development for a smaller downtown transfer location. Both transfer locations are scheduled to be completed in August 2022.

The Bob Billings and Crestline multimodal transfer facility will become the main bus transfer location in Lawrence. It will include 10 sawtooth bus parking bays, a canopy-covered waiting area, bike parking, indoor facilities for bus operators and passengers and a customer service area. It will be located at the southeast corner of Bob Billings and Crestline.

The new downtown transfer facility will move from the current location at the 700 block of Vermont to a new downtown location in August 2022. Candidate sites include City-owned parking lots in the 800 block of Vermont, 1000 block of Vermont, and the 800 block of New Hampshire. It will include amenities such as a canopy-covered waiting area, bike parking and a bus operator restroom. It will also include 5 sawtooth bus parking bays and sidewalk improvements. The new transfer facility will create a more pleasant and appealing space for downtown and be more inviting for commuters and out-of-town travelers.

The general public will be invited to provide input and hear directly from the design consultants on considerations and tradeoffs that have been discussed throughout the project process. The two opportunities for public input are both on Wednesday, June 9.
