Community Transportation

There are several agencies in Douglas County that provide transportation. Below is a list of those services and details about how to use them. A brochure is also available here.

Trip planning, biking, and ride-hailing

To plan a walking, biking, driving, or transit trip, use www.google.com/maps. To see a map of bike routes in Lawrence, visit lawrenceks.org/mpo/bikemap. For on-demand door-to-door transportation service, Uber and Lyft provide services through their websites or apps. Find more information at www.uber.com and www.lyft.com/rider.

Lawrence Transit System

Lawrence Transit provides regular fixed-route service for the community of Lawrence.
Hours: 6 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Days: Monday – Saturday
Service area: Lawrence city limits
Who can use it: General public
Trip purpose: Any
Cost: Free with KU ID, $1.00 for general public, $0.50 reduced fare

T Lift

T Lift is a door-to-door, shared-ride paratransit service provided by the City of Lawrence. T Lift service is available for transit riders who, because of a disability, are unable to use the fixed routes.
Hours: 6 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Days: Monday – Saturday
Service area: Lawrence city limits
Who can use it: General public. Must be certified as eligible. (See the website below for application materials.)

Night Line

Night Line is the after-hours shared-ride bus service for those who don’t work on a traditional schedule.
Hours: 8 p.m. – 6 a.m.
Days: Monday – Saturday
Service area: Lawrence city limits
Who can use it: General public
Trip purpose: Any
Cost: $2.00 one-way. Single Ride Tickets and 10-Ride Punch Cards equivalent to the fare are also accepted.

KU on Wheels

KU on Wheels exists to provide safe, convenient, reliable and responsive public transit services to enhance the social and environmental well-being of the University of Kansas community.
Hours: 6 a.m. – 7 p.m. On-campus circulators continue until 10:30 p.m., Monday – Thursday.
Days: Monday – Friday while KU is in session, except holidays and breaks
Service area: Lawrence city limits
Who can use it: KU students, general public
Trip purpose: Any
Cost: Free with KU ID, $1.00 for general public, $0.50 reduced fare. KU campus is fare-free zone for all.

JayLift

JayLift provides door-to-door transportation to KU students, staff and faculty who are permanently or temporarily disabled.
Hours: 7 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Days: Monday – Friday
Service area: Lawrence city limits
Who can use it: Students, faculty, and staff who are certified as eligible. (See the website below for application materials.)
Trip purpose: University-related trips
Cost: Free with KU ID

SafeRide

SafeRide is a demand-response service giving students a ride home from anywhere within the city limits.
Hours/Days: SafeRide operates 10:30 p.m. – 2:30 a.m. seven nights per week during fall and spring semesters, and Thursday through Saturday during summer session, except during class breaks and holidays.

Who can use it: KU students
Trip purpose: SafeRide only provides trips to place of residence.

K-10 Connector

RideKC, in partnership with Johnson County, provides public transportation services to Johnson County, downtown Kansas City, Mo., Kansas City, Kan., and other outlying areas.
Hours: 6 a.m. – 11:30 p.m. (Service ends at 7:20 p.m. on Fridays.)
Days: Monday – Friday
Service area: Johnson and Douglas Counties (connecting the two KU campuses and JCCC)
Who can use it: General public
Trip purpose: Any
Cost: $3.00 one-way

Senior Resource Center for Douglas County, Inc. (SRC)

SRC is committed to creating opportunities that allow older residents of Douglas County to remain independent and active in their homes and communities.
Hours: 7 a.m. – 3:40 p.m.
Days: Monday – Friday
Service area: Douglas County
Who can use it: Age 60+
Trip purpose: Any
Cost: $4.00 one-way within Lawrence city limits, $6.00 one-way within Douglas County (adjusted for clients in need). A short application is required.

Independence, Inc.

Since 1978, Independence, Inc. has served as a resource in Lawrence and Northeast Kansas through our mission to maximize the independence of people with disabilities through advocacy, peer support, training, transportation and community education.
Hours: Transportation from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. Office is open 8:30 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Service area: Douglas County
Who can use it: Elderly (Age 60+), Disabled, General Public
Trip purpose: Any
Cost: $3.00 one-way in town, $5.00 one-way in Douglas County, $30.00 for out-of-town medical trips

The Bert Nash Center is a nonprofit community mental health organization offering a wide range of outpatient services for adults, children, and families.
Hours: 9 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Trip purpose: Medical, shopping, employment

Babcock Bus

The mission of the Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority is to promote quality affordable housing, economic opportunity and a suitable living environment free from discrimination.
Hours: 8 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Who can use it: Residents of Babcock Place and Peterson Acres
