Celebrating National Transit Employee Appreciation Day
Lawrence Transit joins public transportation agencies across the country who will be recognizing their employees for their hard work and dedication on Tuesday, March 18.
We celebrate the service of the transit workers who keep our city mobile. It takes a team of bus drivers, maintenance staff, road supervisors, dispatchers, management and professional staff to keep this vital lifeline available for our community.
At their March 12 meeting, Douglas County Commissioners recognized March 16-22, 2025 as Transit Driver & Worker Appreciation Week.
The proclamation makes note of the many responsibilities transit workers on a daily basis. “Transit drivers work to help community members reach essential destinations while also meeting stringent safety requirements; and transit drivers must demonstrate customer service, patience, empathy, and understanding to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for community members and visitors; and public transportation plays an important role in the County’s effort toward achieving sustainability goals.”
Several agencies in our area are included in that recognition.
- Senior Resource Center provides over 11,000 trips to our senior population countywide.
- Independence Inc. provides rides for general public transportation, non-emergency medical trips outside of Douglas County, and completes over 5,000 rides annually.
- Lawrence Transit is the coordinated City of Lawrence and University of Kansas bus system and provides more than 2.3 million rides per year, including fixed-route, paratransit, and on demand bus service.
“Our transit workers keep our community moving, ensuring safe, reliable transportation for all,” said Felice Lavergne, Interim Director of Transit. “Their dedication and hard work make a difference in people’s lives every day, and we are truly grateful for their service.”
