Ridership increases 13% between 2015 and 2016

Lawrence Transit and the University of Kansas brought home shiny new awards again this year for the highest ridership in the state of Kansas from the Federal Transit Administration. The award was presented at the Kansas Public Transit Association Annual Meeting and Expo in Garden City, Kansas on August 15.

From 2015-2016, ridership increased by 374,143 riders, which is the highest increase of any urban transit provider in the state of Kansas. This includes ridership numbers from both the City of Lawrence and the University of Kansas.

This is the third year in a row that this award has been given to Lawrence’s coordinated transit system. Lawrence Transit System has had tremendous success in recent years by providing excellent bus service to the residents of Lawrence.

“This is a combined effort of a lot of people working very hard to achieve results and offer the best service to both KU students and the residents of Lawrence,” said Robert Nugent, transit administrator. “This shows that our transit system in Lawrence is working and people are using it to get to school, jobs, errands and appointments. We hope to continue to refine and improve our service to make it better each year.”

“KU and Lawrence community members continue to demonstrate the value and importance of transit in their lives,” said Danny Kaiser, associate director of parking and transit at KU, who was also recognized at the meeting for his outstanding service to public transit in Lawrence.

Lawrence Transit looks forward to many positive changes in the next year. A new K-12 Student Semester Pass is now being offered to students, and a new and improved app and texting function allow bus riders to find out when their bus is coming.
