Central station rolls out state-of-the-art bike amenities

May 21, 2024

Lawrence Transit recognizes that bicycles are a major part of the success of public transit. Bus riders are able to get farther by combining a bike and the bus. If riders don’t live next to a bus stop, a bicycle can help close the gap. This Bike Month, we wanted to talk about some of the ways we encourage bicycle use at Central Station. To see some examples, watch a short video.

When bus riders arrive at Central Station, the following amenities make it a safe home for bicycles while riders take the bus elsewhere:
• Bike lockers that give you extra peace of mind while you run errands elsewhere.
• Indoor and outdoor bike racks, including standing bike racks for a variety of places to store your bike, even if you’re worried about rain. The standard bike racks even include a rubber coating, which is easier on bicycle frames.
• Bike ramps that help you take your bicycle up and down stairs.
• Bike racks are still included on buses for you to easily take your bike with you.

“Central Station includes modern bicycle facilities typically found in much larger cities, such as outdoor bicycle lockers and a bike ramp along the main entrance stairs,” said Adam Weigel, Director of Transit. “The City is proud to bring these first-in-the-region features to Lawrence riders.”

Transit becomes more accessible and more effective when it works together with bicycles. Lawrence Transit continues to encourage the use of bicycles to broaden the scope of what transit can do for our community.
