‘Travel Training’ program offers an easy, comfortable introduction to bus riding

July 8, 2026

Sometimes trying a new experience can be less intimidating if you go with a friend. That’s why Lawrence Transit offers a Travel Training program to help folks who are new to using the bus system.

Dre’Vel Taylor, Mobility Manager with Lawrence Transit, recently took a group of seniors from Babcock Place on a bus-riding adventure. Along for the ride was Kirsty Feltz with Lawrence-Douglas County Housing Authority.

“The ride on the bus was a fun experience for everyone that went on the trip,” said Feltz. “Some of the people on the bus were ‘first timers,’ meaning they had never ridden on the city bus. The driver was friendly and gave clear and easy to understand directions.”

In this case, the group was around 20 people. However, Travel Training can be set up for any size group, or just one person. The program can include a PowerPoint presentation on all the details of the system, as well as a first trip riding the bus along with the Mobility Manager.

Feltz said some of the passengers from Babcock Place learned how to track the bus using the Transit app on their phones. Others brought mobility devices and learned how to get on and off the bus using the ramp feature. “I had a blast taking everyone,” said Feltz. “I was nervous at first, taking that many people, however the trip was filled with great memories.”
