Route 1 reroute update
Bus Route 1 will remain on its current reroute until construction projects in the Harper, 19th and Haskell area are complete.
An upcoming Harper Street construction project is expected to begin after the Douglas County Fair in August. Once that project is complete, Route 1 will run as posted in the Transit Guide. We’re keeping the current reroute in place to provide consistent service for riders and drivers while additional construction work is still ahead.
Why not return to the regular route during the break in construction?
Because the upcoming Harper Street project will require the same reroute again once work begins. Keeping the current reroute in place now helps riders continue using travel patterns they have already adjusted to during construction.
What is the current reroute?
Route 1 is not making the Harper, 19th and Haskell loop during construction. Instead, it travels along 23rd Street through Haskell Indian Nations University, then resumes the regular route.
Does this construction benefit transit riders?
Yes. When construction is complete, 6 bus stops will be improved with space for a bench or shelter, and 2 additional stops will become ADA accessible.
How can I stay updated?
Download the Transit app or check the Lawrence Transit Alerts page for current stop and reroute information.
