Fruit trees and transit make a great pear

April 5, 2023

Lawrence Transit worked with Lawrence Fruit Tree Project, City of Lawrence Forestry department, and community members to plant nine fruit trees at three bus stops in transportation disadvantaged areas of Lawrence.

Fruit trees were generously donated by Lawrence Fruit Tree Project, a program of Sunrise Project, and will be cared for by the City Forestry department.

“Lawrence Fruit Tree Project is excited to collaborate with the City of Lawrence to plant more public fruit trees,” said Skyler Adamson, Lawrence Fruit Tree Project Coordinator. “Public fruit trees not only produce free nutritious food, they strengthen our community connections. Productive trees at transit stops makes great sense because transit users and pedestrians will have easy access to free fruit.”

Trees were planted near:
Bus stop 131 – Haskell and 16th
Bus stop 368 – Haskell and 12th
Bus stop 150 – 4th and Maine

“It’s such a pleasure to join in the vision of Lawrence Fruit Tree Project and Lawrence Transit. This is a fantastic endeavor to show that food/fruit production can be a part of our everyday lives,” said Levi Parkin, Forestry Supervisor. “Fruit doesn’t have to come from a grocery store or an orchard outside of town, it can be a tangible, accessible resource for everyone. Fruit can come from our backyards, our parks, our public spaces and, as we’re proving now, from our bus stops. Plan to see more accessible, edible landscaping coming to our community.”

Lawrence Transit has around 400 bus stops across our community. Check out our project page to learn more about the Bus Stop Improvement program and to stay up to date with our progress.

“We’d like to thank our project partners and volunteers for making this wonderful project a reality,” said Felice Lavergne, Transit Planner II. “This partnership is a unique and exciting part of Lawrence Transit’s larger efforts to make bus stops joyful, comfortable places that reflect our community.”
