Transit ridership in Lawrence continues to increase. This week, the City of Lawrence Transit department released a report showing that there were 1,125,795 people who rode The T in 2014. That was an increase of 4.5% over 2013 and a 157% increase in ridership since 2008.

“These ridership numbers are terrific, and it shows that people are getting out and riding the bus in Lawrence,” said Robert Nugent, Transit Administrator. “We have made many improvements to our service that make riding the bus easier. These improvements, as well as coordinated schedules, night service, partnerships in the community and working closely with KU have made Lawrence Transit a very successful transit system.”

The report also highlights new services added in 2014. One new service for transit passengers is the use of GPS or real-time transit information. Transit passengers can now send a text message to find out exactly when their bus will arrive. They can also download the “Where’s My Bus” app to see where their bus is located and at what time it is expected to arrive.

Another added benefit to transit riders is the increase in bus pass sales outlets. Dillons and Hy-Vee stores in Lawrence started selling bus passes in 2014 with great results. With six new sales outlets, passengers can now purchase their monthly bus passes and 10-ride tickets at many different locations in town.

The Student Summer Bus Pass program had a successful second year with increased sales of 33% over the previous year. At just $10 for 3 months, parents have found the summer pass to be a great way to get their K-12 kids to summer activities. The Lawrence Public Library was a key partner in the program, providing a bus pass giveaway for some of the kids participating in the summer reading program. The City of Lawrence Parks and Recreation department worked to market and sell the passes at both aquatic centers.
