Books and buses team up

January 30, 2014

Lawrence Transit System teamed up with the Lawrence Public Library to provide a special “Books & Bus” storytime on Friday, Feb. 7. More than 100 people participated in the event, and it was a great success.

Linda Clay, beloved storytime librarian, read books with a bus and transportation theme. Then children and their families boarded a hybrid bus for a short trip around downtown. Among the landmarks they passed was the site of the new library renovation. After arriving back at the library, kids created a bus-themed craft project.

“What a fantastic day!” said Karen Allen, youth services coordinator for the library. “Having the bus at storytime was such fun and our patrons, both kids and parents, had a great time. We’ll definitely be continuing this partnership with more storytimes in the future.”

The library and the transit system have also collaborated on the Student Summer Bus Pass program, which will continue this year.

“Combining children’s interest in buses along with reading provides a good opportunity for working together,” said Robert Nugent, transit administrator. “The 3-month summer pass provides a great way for kids to get around to activities such as the Summer Reading Program.”
